The University Police Department has begun an investigation of alleged sexual assault cases in on-campus housing.
“An active investigation was initiated as soon as the sexual assault was reported to have occurred in an apartment on campus the morning of Sunday, Jan. 14,” UPD Chief Michael Barton wrote.
Two cases of rape were posted to the JSU crime log on Sunday morning, with both being reported on Jan. 14 at 4:55 a.m.
One was listed to have occurred at 2:30 a.m., with the other listed to have occurred at 4:50 a.m. Both were listed to have occurred at The Pointe apartment complex.
Barton said that while the investigation is ongoing, it was an isolated occurrence and poses no threat to the campus community.
“I would like to encourage any individual who believes they have related to this case to contact University Police at 256-782-5050 and speak with an investigator or to provide details through the Cocky Watch’s phone app Submit a Tip feature,” Barton wrote.
This is a developing story and will be updated as information becomes available.
